This guide walks you through everything you need to know, from lighting your candle for the first time to preserving its sculptural form.
1. The First Burn: Why It Matters Most
The first time you light your Dulenn candle is the most important burn of its life. Soy and beeswax candles have a "memory" — the wax will only melt as wide as it did on the first burn.
- Allow a full melt pool to form. On the first burn, let the candle burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted edge to edge. This typically takes 2–3 hours depending on the diameter of your candle.
- Never extinguish early on the first burn. Doing so creates a "tunnel" — a narrow channel down the centre — which wastes wax and shortens burn life significantly.
- Place on a heat-safe, flat surface. The sculptural base of your Dulenn candle is designed to sit stably, but always ensure the surface beneath is protected from heat.
2. Wick Care: Trim Before Every Burn
A well-trimmed wick is the single most effective way to extend your candle's life and maintain a clean, even flame.
- Trim the wick to 5mm (¼ inch) before each use.
- Use a wick trimmer or small scissors — never break the wick by hand, as this can cause uneven burning.
- A properly trimmed wick produces a steady, medium-height flame with minimal soot. If your flame is flickering excessively or producing black smoke, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, and trim the wick before relighting.
3. Burn Time & Sessions
Dulenn sculptural candles are formulated with a 100% natural soy and beeswax blend, which burns cooler and more slowly than paraffin — a deliberate choice for both longevity and air quality.
- Recommended burn session: 2–4 hours at a time.
- Maximum session: Never burn for more than 4 hours continuously. Extended burns cause the wick to "mushroom," producing soot and reducing scent throw.
- Allow cooling time: Let the wax solidify completely between burns before relighting. This preserves the sculptural integrity of the modular form.
4. Protecting the Sculptural Form
Unlike conventional candles, Dulenn's modular design means the wax drip and melt are part of the aesthetic experience. However, a few precautions will keep your piece looking its best.
- Keep away from drafts. Air currents cause uneven burning and can distort the sculptural layers. Position your candle away from open windows, fans, and air conditioning vents.
- Rotate occasionally. If your candle is near a light source or window, rotate it 90° every few burns to ensure even melting on all sides.
- Embrace the drip. The flowing wax is intentional — a living quality that makes each Dulenn candle unique. The pink, purple, and navy pigments are formulated to blend beautifully as they melt.
5. Scent Throw & Fragrance Care
Dulenn candles are scented with a premium blend of sandalwood, lotus, and oud — a warm, sophisticated combination designed to fill a room without overwhelming it.
- For optimal scent throw, burn in a room of 15–25 m² (160–270 sq ft).
- Do not use a lid or cover while burning — this traps heat and can cause the fragrance to dissipate unevenly.
- Store your unlit candle away from direct sunlight to prevent the natural wax from discolouring and the fragrance oils from evaporating prematurely.
6. Extinguishing Safely
- Use a candle snuffer rather than blowing out the flame. Blowing can splatter hot wax onto the sculptural surface and push the wick off-centre.
- After extinguishing, straighten the wick while the wax is still soft to ensure it is centred for the next burn.
- Stop burning when approximately 1cm (½ inch) of wax remains at the base. Burning beyond this point can overheat the vessel and damage the sculptural base.
7. After the Candle: Giving the Vessel a Second Life
The Dulenn sculptural base is designed to outlast the candle itself. Once the wax is spent:
- Remove residual wax by placing the piece in the freezer for 1–2 hours — the wax will contract and lift away cleanly.
- Wipe the interior with a soft cloth.
